Things to do near Mauléon
our guide to the region

Most visitors discover Mauléon on their way to Puy du Fou and are surprised by how much the surrounding region has to offer. The Deux-Sèvres is one of those quietly beautiful parts of France that rarely makes the headlines but consistently delights people who spend time there. Here is what we recommend from the manor, depending on what you enjoy.

Living à la française, right here in Mauléon

Before you even leave the manor grounds, there is something worth appreciating. You are staying in a building that has stood since the 16th century, surrounded by old stone walls, ancient trees and the kind of unhurried silence that is increasingly hard to find. The rabbits that wander through the park are not staged. The apples in the orchard are real. The pétanque court under the century-old trees has been used by generations of people who lived here.

This is what France looked like before it became a tourist destination. And in a way, it is a perfect introduction to what Puy du Fou celebrates so brilliantly in its shows: the texture of French history, the weight of the countryside, the slow rhythm of a life built around stone and seasons. You get to experience it from the inside.

The Friday morning market in Mauléon is a good way to start a week here. Local producers bring vegetables, cheeses, charcuterie and eggs. It takes about half an hour and gives you everything you need for a proper French lunch back at the manor.

10 minutes

The Oriental Park of Maulevrier

This is probably the region's best-kept secret. The Oriental Park of Maulevrier is the largest Japanese garden in Europe outside Japan. Pagodas, stone lanterns, koi ponds, bamboo groves and zen gardens spread across a beautifully maintained landscape. In June when the irises are in bloom, it is quite extraordinary.

It is 10 minutes from the manor and makes a perfect half-day. Two to three hours is enough to walk the full circuit comfortably. There are also temporary exhibitions and cultural events throughout the season. For families who want a quieter morning after a full day at Puy du Fou, this is an ideal choice.

20 minutes

Puy du Fou

The most celebrated historical theme park in France, and arguably in Europe, is 20 minutes away. The Grand Parc offers 35 shows across a full day, covering everything from Roman gladiators to 20th-century resistance fighters, all performed with extraordinary production values. The Cinéscénie, the vast outdoor night show with 2,700 actors and fireworks across 23 hectares, is genuinely unlike anything else.

Most guests staying at the manor spend two or three days at the park over the course of a week. The proximity makes it easy to go in the morning, return to the manor for a proper lunch, and head back for the evening shows. Coming home to a 16th-century manor house after a day spent watching French history come to life feels entirely appropriate.

20 minutes

Bressuire Golf Course

The 18-hole golf course at Bressuire is less than 20 minutes from the manor. It is open to all levels and offers equipment rental on site. A good option for those in the group who want a quiet morning while others are visiting the region.

30 minutes

Pescalis

For anglers in the group, Pescalis is an exceptional destination. Eight lakes with over 30 species of fish, catering to all levels from beginners to serious coarse fishermen. It is 30 minutes from the manor. A full day there, followed by dinner back at the manor, is the kind of simple pleasure that a week in the French countryside is made of.

45 minutes

The Marais Poitevin — La Venise Verte

The Poitevin Marsh, known as the Green Venice, is one of France's most atmospheric landscapes. Flat-bottomed boats glide along canals under an almost continuous canopy of trees, the water surface covered with bright green duckweed. The villages of Coulon, Arcais and La Garette are the best starting points. Allow a full day: boat hire, a long lunch at a canal-side auberge, a slow afternoon walk. Children love the boats. Adults love the silence.

1 hour

The Atlantic Coast

Les Sables-d'Olonne is an hour away. For a week-long stay, one day at the Atlantic coast feels like a natural part of the rhythm. Long sandy beaches, a proper seaside promenade, fresh seafood. Nothing more complicated than that, but very welcome after a few days of history and countryside.

1 hour

Futuroscope

Near Poitiers, Futuroscope is a science and entertainment park built around immersive experiences and cutting-edge technology. It has evolved considerably in recent years and offers strong evening shows. A good alternative day trip for families with older children who enjoy something more forward-looking alongside the historical immersion of Puy du Fou.

Cycling and walking from the manor

The bocage countryside around Mauléon is excellent for cycling. The roads are quiet, the gradients are gentle and the landscapes are genuinely beautiful in a soft, unhurried way. You can leave directly from the manor gates without needing to load bikes onto a car. Running routes along the Ouin river and through the surrounding farmland are equally accessible on foot.

The manor is the kind of base that makes a week go by very naturally. Some days you head out early and come back late. Other days you stay in the park, read by the pool, play tennis after breakfast and eat long lunches under the trees. Both are good days.
